We heartily congratulate Mr. Penn on his recent Academy Award, duly won for his moving portrayal of Harvey Milk. Not only did Sean Penn enact the role with integrity and passion on-screen, he was also willing to carry on the legacy of Harvey Milk, in some small way, in his outspoken acceptance speech of the Oscar on Sunday night, February 22, 2009.

We thank Mr. Penn for his solidarity with the LGBT community, and his willingness to speak out on behalf of Equality. His words denouncing those Californians who voted in favor of Proposition 8 resounded the message of Tolerance that Harvey Milk himself represented. That Mr. Penn chose to proclaim this lofty message, on a national stage, at a moment when other more personal words might seem a priority, speaks highly of the actor’s commitment and ethical standing.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Sean Penn, for his ongoing work on behalf of Equal Rights for all Americans.
