The elections of November 4, 2008 were extremely heartening for many Americans, including those who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, queer or questioning. The election of Barack Obama as our next President is a monumental triumph for our African American brothers and sisters and for all Americans who envision a country of true liberty, freedom and justice for all. Mr. Obama’s presence in the White House will surely be a step forward with regard to the pursuance of greater respect and tolerance for the GLBTQ minority in states all across America.
However, the November 4th passage of Proposition 8 in California and the passage of marriage bans in Florida and Arizona, along with the foster and adoption ban in Arkansas serve to actively restrict the rights of a minority in our nation; a minority well over 19 million strong. Such legislation does not uphold the tenets of our nation’s promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, nor our Constitution’s promise of justice for all its citizens.
Instead, by banning marriage and adoption rights for the GLBTQ community, this legislation only serves to weaken over 19 million citizens in their ability to care for and protect their families. This legislation serves only to deny rights, instead of protect them. In our minds, such legislation is un-constitutional and we must strive to overturn any such inequalities within the fabric of our nation’s laws. It is the right and patriotic action to take.
We, the undersigned, are adding our names in protest of such anti-gay legislation. We stand strong from states across the nation, and hereby commit to pursuing true equality for all our citizens specifically with regard to marriage and family rights.
Furthermore, we understand that the gay minority in America holds a buying power of over 600 billion per year; we hereby commit to investing our dollars with companies that actively uphold a policy of non-discrimination.
Many of us have added our photos to the Commitment Photo Album.™ Through bringing the real faces of America’s GLBTQ minority into greater public visibility, along with our advocates and allies, we are determined to bring a higher degree of legitimacy to the very real issues facing equal family rights and equal rights in marriage.
We are a minority due the same rights, responsibilities and protections under United States law. We will pursue such rights until Equality for Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transgendered, Queer and Questioning Citizens becomes an integral and unswerving reality within our nation.
