Center (The Center) serves as the social and cultural epicenter for
Long Island’s GLBT community, providing a variety of programs and
services to GLBT adults and families. Many community groups call The
Center their home.
When Long
Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) opened its 2nd community center
in 2003, a number of community groups immediately began requesting to
utilize space in the center for their meetings. During that same time,
community need for support services for GLBT people 21 and up grew
dramatically. To answer the call from the community, The Center was
formed as a nonprofit organization. After several years of community
focus groups and meetings, The Center became part of an efficient new
model of service delivery, The Long Island GLBT Services Network (The
Network). The Network is an association of three organizations that
serve the GLBT community throughout the lifespan-LIGALY, serving youth
13-21; The Long Island GLBT Community Center (The Center), serving
adults and families; and Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders – Long
Island (SAGE-LI) serving GLBT seniors age 50 and beyond.
